The purpose of this job is to perform laboratory work in support of activities associated with production, sale, and distribution of REG products; with continuous improvement of REG manufacturing processes; and with business development activities.

Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & PERCENT OF TIME:
Laboratory Testing (70%)
  • Perform all tests available in the laboratory and maintain the equipment and instruments used for those tests.
  • Perform laboratory testing of raw materials and products.
  • Monitor instrument performance in accordance with REG's Statistical Quality Control (SQC) program.
  • Assist in the evaluation of product nonconformity.
  • Design and conduct laboratory experiments in support of continuous improvement and business development initiatives.
  • Promptly submit test results to the appropriate database, issuing reports if necessary
  • Light manual labor outside grabbing samples and performing regular job duties.
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 75lbs unassisted.
Laboratory Upkeep (10%)
  • Monitor inventory of supplies and lab gases and place orders when necessary to ensure that supplies are always available.
  • Enter and receive Purchase Orders in JD Edwards for ordered supplies
  • Monitor lab waste levels and initiate steps for removal when necessary
  • Perform general laboratory cleaning and maintenance
  • Perform routine maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
Documentation and Record Keeping (10%)
  • Maintain necessary safety records, including equipment inspections and Safety Data Sheets
  • Adhere to existing safety standards and help improve laboratory safety practices whenever possible
  • Document laboratory work and store records in approved locations
  • Create and maintain SOPs and other instructional laboratory documents.
Support (10%)
  • Provide technical support to other REG departments as needed.
  • Provide additional technical support to process optimization and continuous improvement efforts within Manufacturing.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Visio)
Preferred Education:
  • 4-year bachelor's degree - Chemistry, Biology, or other STEM related field (not required)
Skills Preferred:
  • Knowledge of oils and fats or other agricultural products and processing
  • Knowledge of petroleum industry and products
  • Experience with product quality assurance methodologies and troubleshooting (root-cause analysis, statistical quality control, etc.)
  • Knowledge of Plant Information (PI) and JD Edwards or equivalent
  • Knowledge of laboratory equipment including but not limited to, GC's, ICP's, titrators, distillation equipment, combustion analyzers, density/viscosity analyzers, cold property analyzers, wet chemistry apparatus
  • Familiarity with ASTM and other test method governing bodies
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Teams

Mental Requirements:
This position requires high levels of concentration, frequent math and algebraic calculations, moderate analytical ability, this job requires continuous mental alertness to effectively analyze data and develop multi-faceted information, in a fast-paced environment. Medium to high stress levels during testing procedures is possible.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to distinguish colors, and possess otherwise good vision, corrected to normal, for safety in job functions and ability to read printed text and on a computer screen for extended periods of time. Good hearing, corrected to normal, for job safety. Some mobility required to move throughout the office and production areas. Repetitive hand motions, including firm grasping and fine manipulation of small parts occur during lab testing procedures. Frequent activities involve walking, standing, reaching above the shoulders, pushing/pulling, and occasional lifting of containers up to 75 pounds unassisted, 75-250 pounds assisted and maneuver up to 600 pounds with a handcart. Other occasional physical requirements include, sitting, bending/stooping, kneeling, and climbing.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
General office working conditions with extended periods sitting while operating computer terminals/phones. Significant amount of time spent viewing computer terminal, filling orders and/or reading detailed reports. Extended or flexible work hours as needed or required by industry or corporate situations.
